Whole Body Supplement Support for Whole Body Recovery from CRC

by Tarilee Cornish, Nutritional Consultant

Candida Related Complex (CRC) can stress and damage tissues throughout the body. Candida does this through two mechanisms-it directly invades tissues and it releases toxins that circulate through the bloodstream. Candida overgrowth can affect any organ in the body. In order to address "systemic" CRC, it's usually necessary to use a number of natural supplements and remedies that facilitate whole body cleansing and strengthening. First and foremost, the colon and intestinal tract must be both cleansed and repopulated with beneficial intestinal bacteria. Any remaining problems with intestinal permeability must be resolved. Once colon health has been improved and the intestinal Candida populations reduced, it is time to address fungal growth elsewhere in the body. Finally, the immune, digestive, and eliminative functions need to be toned and strengthened. This article will look at specific products that support each of these stages of healing.

Please note that the information presented in this article is not meant to replace medical supervision. Consult with your health care practitioner before using any natural remedies. You may consider consulting with a health care professional that specializes in CRC recovery. Many naturopathic doctors and some medical doctors specialize in this area and can provide guidance for you throughout your CRC recovery program. To find an appropriate practitioner, look for professionals who practice orthomolecular medicine, ecological medicine, environmental medicine and/or naturopathic medicine. A practitioner who utilizes electro-dermal screening (EDS) technology can assess your organ stress, allergies, and your compatibility with specific supplements. For more information on EDS, see the WholeApproach article, Candida Related Complex and Food Allergies in the Newsletter Article Archives for October 2002.

Cleanse the Colon First
The first and most important step to CRC recovery is reducing both the yeast and fungal forms of Candida that inhabit the colon. The Whole Approach Program featuring the Attogram brand products is the most effective and deeply cleansing colon yeast treatment on the market. It is made up of the combination of three products: a liquid anti-fungal called Caprol; an absorptive, detoxifying liquid clay called Bentonite; and a special colon-scrubbing blend of Psyllium husk and seed powder.

The Caprol kills Candida while the Bentonite adsorbs toxins, including those created by yeast die-off, heavy metals, free radicals, and pesticides. The psyllium fiber blend absorbs the Bentonite and toxins, taking them into its matrix to be quickly escorted out of the body.

Bentonite, Caprol, and Psyllium: A Synergistic Trio
The Bentonite, Caprol, and Psyllium all depend on each other for their effectiveness. When mixed together with water, the products form a gel that reaches the entire length of the digestive tract. Caprol's effectiveness is due to the help it receives from the Psyllium and Bentonite. The Psyllium component pushes the Caprol antifungal against the walls of the intestines, where it can kill Candida and serves to "escort" the Caprol to the colon, helping move it to its intended destination. Finally, because the Caprol is mixed with Psyllium, the body does not send it to the liver where it would be broken down into benign components that would no longer have anti-fungal power when they reach the colon.

Bentonite adsorbs (acts like a magnet pulling toxins to it) intestinal waste products without being absorbed into the system. Because Bentonite itself is not absorbed into the body, whatever it adsorbs is removed in the feces. Bentonite provides an excellent vehicle for removing miscellaneous intestinal poisons and toxins generated by Candida albicans. The adsorbent action of Bentonite helps eliminate the Candida breeding ground by attracting and removing toxic material. Bentonite also reduces toxic overload ("die-off" reaction) by removing toxins released by dying Candida.

Constipation may occur when initiating colon detoxification and a change in fiber intake levels. If sluggish bowels are an issue for you, you can find some helpful tips for restoring regularity in the Whole Approach article, "Constipation, a Modern Epidemic" in the Newsletter Article Archives for March 2003.

Restore Healthy Intestinal Bacteria
In addition to cleansing the colon, the delicate ecosystem that exists within a healthy intestinal tract needs to be restored. Healthy intestinal flora (i.e. adequate levels of Acidophilus and Bifidus bacteria)
    • help to keep Candida and other intestinal pathogens in check
    • Produces B vitamins
    • Produces lactase enzymes and helps digest lactose
    • Helps digest food and correct digestive disorders
    • Produces lactic acid, hydrogen peroxide and natural antibiotics
    • Possesses anti-cholesteremic factors to reduce cholesterol
    • Deodorize the entire intestinal tract

Kill Systemic Fungal Infections
In serious or prolonged cases of CRC, Candida fungi can migrate beyond the colon and cause problems elsewhere in the body. A variety of anti-fungal agents used on a rotational basis will address systemic yeast. Rotated use of anti-fungals is necessary to prevent Candida from developing resistance to any one agent. Follow three-month treatments with Caprol and then grapefruit seed extract (to kill yeast in the colon) with three-month rotations of Kolorex, Olive Leaf Extract, or Triple Yeast Defense. Over time, the rotated use of all these products will eradicate Candida overgrowth throughout your body. You can read more about the rotation of antifungals in the book, "Conquering Yeast Infections, the Non Drug Solution for Men and Women" by S. Colet Lahoz (available in our store on this site.)

Heal the Intestinal Tract
Leaky gut is an unfortunate consequence of both Candida fungal invasion and the removal of fungus from the intestinal walls. Candida grows into the walls, creating perforations that allow undigested food material to seep into the bloodstream. This can lead to allergic reactions, since food substances in their undigested form are seen as foreign by the immune system. The Homeostatic Soil-based Microorganisms (HSM's) in Formula SBX support the healing of the intestinal tract through the production of short chain fatty acids that help balance the pH of the intestinal tract and thereby create an environment in which tissue repair can take place. (SBX is available in our store on this site.)

Immune System Support
The immune system of CRC sufferers will in many cases require bolstering; since the chronic demands placed on it by Candida-produced chemicals (mycotoxins) can exhaust immune functions to the point of serious suppression. The HSM's in Formula SBX have been shown in laboratory tests to stimulate the human body's production of an important immune compound, alpha-interferon, and to stimulate an increase in antibody production. The Chinese herbs added to the formula amplify this effect.

The support provided by a good quality multi-vitamin/mineral formula can also do wonders for boosting the effectiveness of the whole immune system, as can the immune toning herbs astragalus, Siberian ginseng, lomatium and echinacea. Neutral pH Vitamin C products like Neutral C Plus combined with solvent free grape seed extract such as ActiVin Plus L-OptiZinc (includes a small amount of zinc for extra immune support) can ease the strain on the immune system by specifically reducing histamine-type allergic reactions to foods and inhalant/contact allergens.

Another crucial element of a complete immune supporting program is essential fatty acid (EFA) supplementation. Flax seed oil is an excellent EFA supplement. Individuals with sensitivities or allergies should alternate flax oil with hemp oil and pumpkin seed oil to avoid sparking new food sensitivity.

SBX with Soil Based Micro-Organisms, Yellow Sun Buffered Vitamin C, ActiVin Plus L-OptiZinc and Astragalus Deep Immune Tonic are available available in our store on this site.

Strengthen Digestive Functions
Because CRC can lead to the build-up of fecal matter, digestive organ stress, and friendly bacteria deficiencies, nutrient absorption in individuals with this condition is often reduced dramatically, contributing to immune suppression, slow healing, mood challenges, low energy and a weakening of virtually all body functions.

In addition to closely following a nutrient dense, alkalizing, fiber-rich, and easy to digest diet, one can use several supplements to support better digestion; Probiotic supplements, herbal bitters and digestive enzymes like Digesticol capsules. Probiotic supplements repopulate the intestines with beneficial bacteria; of key importance in digestion and immunity as discussed above. Herbal bitters stimulate the digestive organs to produce more secretions and to work more efficiently. Digestive enzymes do some of the work for the digestive system by assisting with the breakdown of food in the stomach.

Detoxify the Eliminative Organs
During anti-fungal treatment, the liver, lymph, and kidneys can become quite strained due to extra detoxification duties imposed by the mycotoxins released by dying yeast. In some cases, these tissues may also have yeast colonies growing in them. Saint Francis Herb Farms makes an excellent liver tonic called Milk Thistle Combo and it's available through the WholeApproach online store. The use of Daily Detox tea (also available at the Whole Approach store) is another useful support to the cleansing process.

Kidney supporting herbs include uva ursi, parsley, buchu and yarrow. Echinacea and red clover can aid the movement of stagnant lymphatic wastes. Many folks with CRC have high levels of toxicity and liver/kidney congestion. When detoxifying herbs are introduced, it is wise to start with very small dosages - perhaps even in a gentle tea form. Stimulating too much detoxification at once can lead to dramatic healing crises. Because of this, detoxification should only be undertaken under the careful supervision of a qualified practitioner in cases of very serious toxicity. For more information on healing crises, see, "What is a Healing Crisis" in the Newsletter Article Archives for November 2002.

Note also that if CRC has been present long or virulently enough, the adrenal glands and other endocrine glands may need specific intervention in order to rejuvenate them. Again, this task requires the help of a competent professional.

General Information About Supplements
The natural products industry is not as closely regulated as it could be. As a result, the quality of products can vary widely. Before deciding upon a particular brand of supplement, try to research as much as possible about its manufacture. What is the quality of the raw materials used? How carefully are they processed? Alternately, you could seek out a natural products retailer whom you trust and rely on their guidance regarding different brands of supplements.

If you don't feel your retailer is competent and able to provide you with detailed reasons for their brand choices, you may want to ask your health care provider for help. Consider that many practitioners sell more expensive (but not always better), "professional" product lines and may not know what is available in the stores.

Keep in mind as you are researching quality that many supplements can pose a "catch 22." We do in fact need extra nutrients to help boost immunity and support the detoxification process but supplements can be full of excipients (additives needed for processing) that have the potential to cause reactions. They can also contain ingredients derived from food sources to which an individual may be sensitive. In most cases, the vitamin and mineral extracts are purified to such a degree that only the most sensitive person would have reactions to them if they came from a food to which that person is allergic. Nonetheless, the possibility of reaction to supplements exists.

If you have multiple allergies, you'll want to remain aware of how you are responding to your supplements. If you have a tendency to develop new allergies, then you will want to consider rotating your supplements or at least reducing your chances of developing an allergy to them by taking them every other day. You can use a health journal to track your responses to new supplements and to stay aware of your continued response to them. In general, it is a good idea to take a break from supplement use once in a while. I recommend that even healthy people take a break from all supplements for one day each week.

When to take Supplements
Take vitamins and minerals with food. Calcium and/or magnesium can be taken with meals EXCEPT if you have low stomach acid, because they can buffer acid. If that is the case, take these minerals at bedtime; they can also be taken on their own before bed as a sleep aid.

Most herbs should be taken between meals unless they irritate the stomach.

Phytonutrients like grape seed extract should be taken with food.

The super absorptive Whole Approach Candida purge drink must be taken separately from all supplements and medications by at least two hours so that the supplements can be absorbed without interference from the psyllium gel.

Keep in mind that by describing the supplements mentioned in this article as helpful for CRC recovery, I am not attempting to imply that this combination of supports should be used in a "cookie cutter" approach. Every individual will have unique challenges associated with CRC. I believe that it is useful to assess your health in each of the areas mentioned in this article and then to determine which of the suggested products best fits your needs.
